Coming up in a future release:

A feedback from a user: "There is a hole in the iOS GPS bicycle apps that allow you to create a custom map, load it and have it give turn by turn directions for the custom map.  There are apps that track where you are going or will maintain a course for ride over ride comparison (speed, rate, etc) such as mapmyride, etc.  There are apps that will plot A to B routing (in your case offer some alternate routes) and let you follow that route.

But there isn’t an app that will let you plot out a turn by turn bicycle ride where you want to go.  Often you would plan a 50 mile ride that starts and ends at the same place.  Your app wouldn’t know how to do that.  Other apps will let you plot and will track but won’t give you turn by turn directions and that makes it difficult to plot a ride into an area you are not familiar with.

Even if the app would allow you to upload a tcx, gpx, krc file and follow it with turn by turn directions……

But the bomb would be to plot your course, see it on screen as you ride, have it give audio and visual turn by turn directions and then when you complete the ride spit back a bunch of data ……. "

Based on the above feedback we have divided our upcoming releases into several steps:

Step I (coming end of Sep 2013):
====================

A way to upload multiple GPX routes on the map. Note there won't be voice directions as GPX files lack it.

Step II( future - end of October) - Expand Google's limit of 8 waypoints.
=================================

Google charges $10,000/year to provide 23 waypoints. This is kind of useless for  app developers such as us. We are working on a workaround solution to provide you an unlimited number of waypoints. This would be published soon.

Step IV (future - maybe end of Year 2013): Custom route with directions
============================

We are working hard to provide other important aspect which is turn by turn directions for GPX imports. Having audio & visual tun by turn directions for an uploaded GPX file is an enormous effort. A GPX file can be a route map of any place in the world even places where Google has not been (e.g. bike trails, park routes, etc.).  That is why making such an app is exceptionally difficult because you are building a navigation engine ( & not relying on Google for directions). We, at GammaPoint, have all the technology & know how to build such an app. This is a daunting & time task consuming task which will take us 1-3 months to publish. We would be interested in any beta testers that would be willing to load an app with their custom GPX files. Please let us know your thoughts on how we can provide an exceptional service to you.

Note: Due to iOS 7.0 updates, we have been delayed with the promised updates. Our team is working hard to provides the updates soon.

Note: Individual requests for cycling directions may contain up to 8 intermediate waypoints in the request. We are working on a solution to by which user can give more than 8 waypoints. This would be part of the next version
of the app, coming out next month.

NOTE for iPod/iPad users: If your device doesn't have a in-build GPS receiver, you would need an external GPS device.

Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease the battery life.

  • Custom waypoints! Coming soon GPX uploads.

    You asked, we answered. We have implemented custom waypoints based on the feedback provided by a user: "There is a hole in the iOS GPS bicycle apps that allow you to create a custom map, load it and have it give turn by turn directions for the custom map. There are apps that track where you are going or will maintain a course for ride over ride comparison (speed, rate, etc) such as mapmyride, etc. There are apps that will plot A to B routing (in your case offer some alternate routes) and let you follow that route. Your app wouldn’t know how to do that. Other apps will let you plot and will track but won’t give you turn by turn directions and that makes it difficult to plot a ride into an area you are not familiar with. Even if the app would allow you to upload a tcx, gpx, krc file and follow it with turn by turn directions…… But the bomb would be to plot your course, see it on screen as you ride, have it give audio and visual turn by turn directions and then when you complete the ride spit back a bunch of data ……. Hope this helps. Happy to further clarify anything I stated above that doesn’t make sense. "

  • Wish search is better

    by  pixie

    I do like the voice direction and alternative routes. However, the data base for "search" is very limited (notice that in other bike route apps too). Try to find a bus stop or grocery store, it directed me to one miles away!!! To bypass the problem, you pretty much have to find the exact address elsewhere online, paste it and then route... I wish there is a bike route app as awesome as Waze for cars...

    Can't import custom maps, can't hide keyboard once you start typing, doesn't show bike paths, takes forever to map out a custom route, and no tutorials. Really there is nothing good about it at all. It doesn't even deserve one star.

  • Not Ready for prime time

    by DannyL2013

    I do a lot of long rides and have been using the "Tom Tom" app to give me turn by turn audible biking directions in unknown locales. That program has several imperfections, and I was excited to see the new app "Bike On", which uses Google Maps biking option to provide turn by turn audible directions. Unfortunately, at least for the uses I need, Bike On is not ready for prime time. Part of the problem is with the underlying Google mapping engine, which is essentially in Beta for bikes. It does a good job find routes away from traffic, but sometimes finds routes that are dead ends or literally don't exist. The one place where it has an advantage over Tom Tom -- Tom Tom finds only roads well but ignores bike paths -- is also a disadvantage, since it routes you onto bike paths barely passable by mountain goat with no option to tell it you only want road bike passable terrain. This problem, however, is compounded by the Apps programming which instead of rerouting you or advising you to "turn around when possible" when you miss a turn or chose to overrule the program when it's sent you to a billy goat path, just stops functioning when you miss a turn. So you can go miles in the wrong direction without being warned if you miss the turn, and you need to restart the route any time either you find something wrong. The Apps designers left a big flaw here which renders the program close to unusable. Bottom line, Tom Tom is still far superior (although more expensive). Google, I presume, will gradually improve its bike mapping which will help Bike On somewhat. But until the Apps designers fix the programming flaws, Bike On gets a thumbs down.

  • Save your $

    by Kfer17

    Not much different than using a regular GPS. Set your GPS to walking directions and you have this app. Disappointed. Thought it would map routes on roads a bit less congested than the ones suggested. Major roads were in every biking option. The major bike path near my home was never included as an option in the addresses I input into the app. Save your $.

  • Address or any close point of interest not working

    by PGC VII

    Please, please. Check on addresses. I have plugged in different exact address even from google maps on search on the app, and nothing happen!!! Please check on that. Already paid for the app. And is not any good, if that is not fixed
