Love this app? Check out its companion app: How to Cook Everything.
I bought this app not sure whether I'd actually use it much or not since I don't use a lot of recipes generally when I cook. But I love Mr. Bittman and read him frequently in the Times. And I love this app too! Very user-friendly, well-organized and an easy way to incorporate more vegetarian cooking into your menu choices. Very pleased! The recipes I've tried so far have been delicious.
This app is the best cooking app I have used. It is very easy to navigate. I find myself browsing more often than I do with other apps. I enjoy Mark Bittman's articles in the New York Times and the narratives that accompanies the recipes in this app are just as enjoyable to read.
Nicely designed app. But it is frustrating that there is no nutritional information. Many of the recipes seem to be high in fat and calories but it is hard to tell.
This app woks great on its own or in conjunction with the marvelous book of the same title. I have found that my family really enjoys many of these recipes without ever thinking twice about it being healthy or vegetarian. I highly recommend this app.
Good recipes, very nicely organized. Makes effective use of the iPad format. Definitely worth the cost!
If you want to add vegetarian dishes to your repertoire, get this.
Love this app, use it almost daily!
This & the "How to Cook Everything" App are the best cookbook Apps around. the bindings kept breaking on the real books. SV
The recipes are great, as you would expect from Mark Bittman. The format, extra content, navigation, and convenience of having it all right at hand, even in the grocery store, makes this a great resource.
Love this cookbook.
Makes quickly finding recipes and variations easy. Very handy for making a meal with ingredients at hand.
I love this app: well-organized, excellent recipes, common-sense practical approach, interesting and unexpected approaches. It's empowering for a new cook, and surprisingly instructive for an experienced cook. Lots of ways to come across interesting things to eat.
After trying dozens of these recipes for myself and finding what a joy they were, I gave this app to a friend. After four months she is still giving it rave reviews. Truly, this is a gift that keeps on giving – to both of us!
I like this and not a vegetarian.
I love Mark Bittman's NYTimes recipe columns and always wanted to buy his How to Cook Everything Book. I'm so glad I procrastinated until it cam out in app form. The recipes have his wonderful conversational tone, and I love the tips, the variations, and the built-in timer. Cooking is one of my favorite uses of my iPad and using this app is one of my favorite ways to cook.
Great Easy Recipes!
East to use, great recipes
The print edition weighs as much as two bricks. This only weighs a few gazillion protons.
Like a lot of the other reviewers I agree pictures would be nice. The other thing that would be helpful is a better way to search. A table of contents similar to a book would be nice. Right now the browsing is a little tough. A recipe box with categories for your favorites would also be helpful. And yes, more recipes would be nice.
Great recipes! Super easy interface! Keep them coming Mark!
This app is just ok. The recipes seem uninspired. I think Bittman tries to keep them simple so they are easy but nothing in this is fabulous. Disappointing.
Great app - just got it for a friend. Great Gift! I use this as my grocery list too.
I like Mark Bittman's recipes because they're straightforward, uncomplicated and simply delicious. I use this app to give me ideas of what to fix to eat when I'm too tired to think. It's helpful but would be even more so if there were photos of the dishes, to give my mind a nudge and whet my appetite. Really. This is a multimedia age and this app would be so much better with pictures.
It works for me by giving me ideas. Of course MB always gives the less experienced a helping hand.
Anyone wanting to cook vegetarian could consider this book their primer and feel well-informed. I keep this book handy in my kitchen.
Great app, great recipes, great writer!
Overall a nice app, I had the book as well so I'm a little surprised at the substantially lesser count of recipes, however still enough to get you by, great instructions and illustrations! However most recipes don't have pictures which is a big shame, and a bit of a surprise for a $10 app, hope they fix that part, and I would Definitely give it four stars, 5 stars if there would be more recipes .
Easy to understand instructions. Meals that make even meat eaters happy.
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I never give anything 5 stars. I LOVE this app... L.O.V.E. Bittman's recipes ain't bad either. If I had a choice to buy the book or the app... It's the app hands down.
Just buy it as you will not regret doing so.
New and delicious recipes!
My cooking lifeline. I use it daily and every recipe turns out better than I expected.
This is the second book by Mark Bittman that I have purchased as an App. It is easy to use, includes alternatives for ingredients, timers so you don't mess up cooking times and tips, tricks and valuable cooking knowledge to get even the beginner on the right track. Highly recommend both this book and his other book "How To Cook Everything.
I have the hard copy of this recipe book in my kitchen and used it extensively. I got the ap version before I left for the Peace Corps and was only allowed 100lbs of total luggage for two years of living It is wonderful to have familiar recipes and is the same fantastic book in a portable version. Thanks!!
The layout could be better. It's a bit difficult to maneuver through all the recipes. Theres a decent selection of recipes though!
Worth the price. It has everything you would ever need. I don't have to buy cookbooks anymore!
I have had great success with the tasty recipes. The instructions are clear and the "Variation" tab adds depth to usefulness of main recipe.
Everything I've made (including the myriad variations) has been great. Especially fond of the Brussels Sprouts w/hazelnuts.
Obviously no one here understands the definition of vegan- which in the world of food and cookbooks is unimaginable- And had bought this app before and had to pay again for some reason to download it- Not happy now
Seriously, this book gave me the tools I needed to eat well without meat. Highly recommended!
I love this app. Both versions (everything and vegetarian) are great! I especially adore the vegetarian one. All I have to do is follow the recipe, and everything I cook is now amazing! You can go by category, search by ingredient, easy-fast dishes, etc. It doesn't have pictures, but somehow you end up not needing or missing them. The instructions are really clear, good, and easy to follow. I also love that multiple options are often given for an ingredient, so you can easily do with what's in your pantry or available at the store without risking the quality of your outcome. It's only missing one star because the iPhone app doesn't sync with the iPad app, which can be quite annoying. I like to select my recipes for the week and create my weekly shopping list from this selection via the iPad app. But when I go shopping, ideally I would be able to have my shopping list and the ability to use it in the iPhone app (I love the function to tap on an item and move it to "purchased"). But I can't use the app's awesome shopping list on the go, unless I go to the store with my iPad or do my recipe browsing on the iPhone (too small for efficiency). I still can email the list to myself as a plain text list, so it's not the biggest of deals. But please add a sync function!
my favorite part is being able to auto make grocery lists with the ingredients needed for the recipe.
Yummy, yummy in my tummy Really good tasting recipes even for non-vegetarians
Great recipes that even the most loyal carnivore will love
This is by far the best app for recipes and general cooking information. It holds an amazing number of recipes and then variations within the recipes - the possibilities are endless. It is well written, easy to navigate, easy to make notes and save recipes. It's actually fun to read. This has become my go to reference when I have an ingredient and don't know what I want to cook with it. The recipes range from very simple to more complex so it is helpful for all occasions. Each recipe I have made has turned out great. I really admire the work that went into this app. Highly recommended!
Best app for veggie cooks I've seen.
This app and its non-vegetarian counterpart are almost all I use when looking for recipes on my iPad now. Awesome!
Great app. Love the timers and metric option but where are the photos? Please please must have pics of all the dishes
Love the app but saving favorites doesn't work on iPhone or iPsd. Kind of defeats the purpose.
